A four-day national tennis championship will begin this week at the South Fulton Tennis Center.
The 25th annual HBCU National Tennis Championships will be held Sept. 17 through Sept. 20, bringing an estimated 250 tennis athletes from Historically Black Colleges and Universities to compete in Division I and II singles and doubles matches.
According to USTA Georgia, men’s Division I players will represent Hampton University, Norfolk State University, North Carolina Central University and Mississippi Valley State University.
Women’s Division I and II players will represent Albany State University, Florida A&M University, Grambling State University, Hampton University, Mississippi Valley State University and Norfolk State University.
Athletes will compete for both team and individual national championships.
The championships are hosted in partnership with South Fulton Parks and Recreation, USTA Southern, USTA Georgia, USTA Atlanta and the South Atlanta Community Tennis Association.
This year’s festivities also include a High School Recruiting Showcase, giving high school seniors an opportunity to compete in singles and doubles matches and connect with college coaches and representatives.
Players are required to pre-register for the showcase. Doubles matches begin at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, followed by singles matches at 8:45 a.m. Sept. 19.
An HBCU Mini College Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 19 with college representatives sharing information about admissions, campus life, athletics, scholarships and more. The day will also include a coaches presentation and Q&A session.
The tennis tournament is free to attend, although some related events require a fee.
An HBCU Alumni Red Ball Tennis Mixer will be held from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sept. 18. The $25 event will feature a tennis competition for players of all skill levels, along with food, mocktails and music.
The school with the most alumni registered for the mixer will receive a $2,500 donation, according to the HBCU National Tennis Championships organization.
