Newcomer Rick Jackson defeated Lt. Gov. Burt Jones in Tuesday’s primary runoff for the Republican nomination for governor, proving that a massive warchest can speak louder than the endorsements of a president and governor.
Both President Donald Trump and Gov. Brian Kemp endorsed Jones, but he was the target of a well-funded media attack even before Jackson came on the scene. Jackson will now face Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms, who won her primary without a runoff.
In what was also seen as a proxy battle between Trump and Kemp, Rep. Mike Collins, who was endorsed by Trump, defeated former football coach Derek Dooley, who was recruited and endorsed by Kemp. Collins will face Democratic incumbent Sen. Jon Ossoff.
The Democrats’ candidate for lieutenant governor will be state Sen. Josh McLaurin, who defeated Nabilah Parks. He will face state Sen. Greg Dolezol, who defeated state Sen. John F. Kennedy to win the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor.
In the Secretary of State runoffs, former Judge Penny Brown Reynolds defeated Fulton County Commissioner Dana Barrett to win the Democratic nomination while state Rep. Tim Fleming defeated Vernon Jones to win the Republican nomination.
In Fulton County, incumbent County Commission Chair Robb Pitts lost his race against challenger Mo Ivory. And in Commission District 3, longtime commissioner Lee Morris lost to challenger Jodi Merrily.
